Construction and Design
For 17.3-inch notebook Acer Aspire 7740 works well to hide its size with a thin profile. From the side, it seems shorter than expected, with the bottom chassis is not much taller than the VGA-port. Design narrows at the front provide a nice sharp edge of the palmrest. Colours sound with glossy, dark-blue screen-cover, metallic blue finish palmrest and keyboard, and black keyboard.Visible only branding medium-sized Acer logo is displayed front and center. One of the aspects that concern us was the amount of space left around the keyboard, could be used for multimedia keys or other functions.
The build quality on the Aspire 7740 is above average with a solid body that is not so much Flex. Screen cover provides a decent protection effect on the LCD display and allows the screen to be distorted if the tightly on the back. Gloss paint on the screen cover resists light scratches and it seems to keep under daily abuse from carrying it around. Palmrest Keyboard and trim resist smudging and managed to stay clean for most of the reporting period.
Inside the keyboard and palmrest show virtually no flex under pressure. Palmrest not compress one millimeter in compression with particular force. Rigid chassis does a good job to hold body panels attached to it, and does not squeak and creak under normal use. The screen hinges feel strong and keep the screen closed tightly. In general, the body feels strong enough to survive the life of a typical laptop.
Users looking for updates Acer Aspire 7740 will be within easy reach of the components with a single cover on the back of the notebook. Removing the panel provides access to a wireless card, hard disk and RAM.
Screen and speakers
Acer Aspire 7740 comes with a screen HD + with 1600 x 900 pixels. It supports 720P content, but also the content 1080P scaling. For viewing movies and pictures, or just surfing the Internet, the resolution is more than sufficient for most users. Color saturation and contrast on average compared to other screens of this size. Illumination levels of fine for viewing in bright conditions the office, but not bright enough for outdoor viewing with a glossy screen surface. The peak level of brightness 248cd/m2 measured in the center of the screen and dropped to just 199cd/m2 on the corners. The colors on the screen to be consistent around 15 degrees when it is tilted forward or backward. The screen remains visible until about 60 degrees when viewing the part as the lights overpowered reflections on it.
Speakers are Aspire 7740 sound is above average, and pretty good for a system that does not have a subwoofer. In our testing, we found a peak in volume more than enough to watch a movie in the immediate vicinity around the screen. He also supported the simulated surround sound Dolby, that worked very well, if you were mostly on a laptop. Sound output with a hint of heat on low and middle when Dolby Audio Enhancer was switched on and off. For a system costing less than $ 1000, not including the low-frequency driver, we were impressed.
